Waistel Cooper was born in Scotland but, after a short spell in Iceland, spent most of his career in the south west of England (where we believe this piece was made). He contributed to the post-war studio pottery movement and although based far from the London trends, his work is often compared to that of his contemporaries Hans Coper and Lucie Rie. Cooper was the subject of two recent exhibitions at the Fine Art Society in London and Edinburgh, and works are held by a number of major galleries and museums, including the Victoria and Albert in London.
