Large size writing desk by Willy Van Der Meeren. Belgium 1953.
Willy van der Meeren (1923-2002) was a Belgian architect and designer, who was once a pupil of Le Corbusier. In the 1950s he created a number of pieces for Tubax - a manufacturer regarded as a pioneer of Modernism in Belgium - including simple multi-coloured wardrobes and writing desks for schools and colleges, as seen here.
This piece comprises original plywood and Formica top, and grey steel shelf and frame. It is in good vintage condition with some signs of use and age to both the frame and the top; all the rubber feet are in place. Overall the desk has a nice patina and presents well.
