A single large, or oversize, ceramic TOTEM table lamp by Bernard Rooke, England, 1960s.
Sculptural piece, made of hand-made ceramic elements in natural tones of terracotta and stone, with a combination of dry and glazed finishes. The lamp is made up of separate sections, positioned on a central metal tube, with some elements being decorated with Rooke's own hieroglyphic-style symbols. An early piece.
The lamp is in good vintage condition, with flaws in line with the hand-making and firing process, such as cracks, nicks and glaze losses. New wiring will be required and we recommend this is carried out locally to install, to make sure it meets your needs and regulations.
We are showing the lamp with a simple hessian shade, newly made; the piece can be shipped with or without the shade.

Bernard Rooke was born in 1938, and studied ceramics at Goldsmiths College in London. In 1960 he set up a workshop in Forest Hill sharing with another pottery artist, Alan Wallwork. Rooke made progressive sculptural work and early pieces were hand-fashioned using coils and blocks. His work is found in private collections as well as museums and galleries around the world, including the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
