Dining table with sunburst top, attributed to Silvio Cavatorta, Italy 1950s.
The oval design is very nicely made and well-proportioned to seat six. The table features a beautiful sunburst veneer to the top and a floating stretcher of metal, faced with veneered bent-ply; the wood has a range of warm tones, and appears to be teak. Brass spacers sit between the stretcher and the black metal legs and frame; legs are finished in adjustable brass feet.
We have not restored this table, and it remains in good vintage condition, with a light patina and signs of wear to both the wood and the metal, as one might expect from age and use. These include a small mark to the top/edge, occasional dents, scratches and faint signs of oxidation to the metalwork. See images for examples and overview. Offered with a glass cover, which was possibly a bespoke addition, this is a nice example of Italian modern design. For us the combination of high quality workmanship, wood and metal allows the piece to sit well in formal and more relaxed settings; it could also work nicely as a large desk.
