A decorative folding mirror, Italy 1950s.
The oval mirror comprises two layers with double-sided outer leaves opening to reveal three mirrors inside; the glass panels sit within a brass frame with decorative scrolls. An unusual piece with little known background; by following the fixings on the reverse side, we have shown the mirror as wall-mounted with the hinged scrolls at the top. This is heavy piece with three layers of glass to the front and thick plywood to the back. In the style of Gio Ponti.
The piece is in original condition with wear in line with age and use, including patina to both the mirror and metal finish as one might expect for a piece of this age (see images for examples). The design uses no catch or fastener to maintain the position of the outer leaves, so the piece needs to sit true on the wall when hung to allow the doors remain closed or open as required.
