Cloisonné lidded box by jeweller Käthe Ruckenbrod (1905 - 1989). Germany, mid-20th century.
The box is rounded, smooth and tactile to top and bottom; the enamel is golden brown with pale pink details to the outside, and rich turquoise inside. The piece is finished on all sides, with no bare metal aside from the closure, and is unsigned. Beautiful work in both design and execution.
Overall the piece is in good vintage condition; there are faint scratches to the base and a few minor blemishes inside and out - most are likely to have resulted from the making process - see images for details and overview. Lid fits well.
Ruckenbrod was born and educated in Germany, and by the 1930s was working from her own studio. She became known for her jewellery and enamelwork and won numerous awards including a gold medal at the Milan Triennale.
