A large cabinet by Willy Van Der Meeren for Tubax, with sliding doors in blue/grey enamelled steel, and sapele wood sides and long fin-like door pulls. This model has a black metal back, with twin sets of three drawers with moveable shelves above.
Van der Meeren was a Belgian architect and industrial designer who produced a number of designs for Tubax, a manufacturer regarded as a pioneer of Modernism in Belgium. In 2008 a retrospective of his work was held at the Atomium in Brussels. This piece of Belgian social furniture was designed as a wardrobe or locker for schools in the early 1950s. They are now highly collectable and sought after.
The cabinet is in rarely seen original but good used condition. There is some wear to the wood and metal as one might expect from age and use - such as old scratches, rubs and small chips - the doors have no dents and run well.
Dimensions: H 200cm x W 120cm x D 61cm or 65cm to the widest part of the door handles.
We also have a small, and rarely seen, version of this design coming to the collection soon. Please contact us for details.
