A monumental ceramic TOTEM floor lamp by Bernard Rooke, mid-20th century England.
A beautiful sculptural piece, made up of ceramic elements in natural tones of terracotta and stone. A very unusual model with a large pyramid base; each of the other components are of similar size and shape, with variations to the decoration and hieroglyphics. The piece is in good original condition, with occasional minor flaws in line with the making and firing process. This an early model, with hand-formed elements; later pieces being mould-formed.

Please note the lamp will require new wiring, and we recommend this is carried out in the country of install to ensure it meets your local needs and regulations. As always we advise low heat bulbs to protect the piece for the future.
Shade:
We are showing the lamp with a very simple natural hessian shade, recently handmade using typical mid-century proportions. The shade can be included with the base, however please be aware it will impact the shipping charges, please contact us for further details.

Bernard Rooke was born in 1938, and studied ceramics at Goldsmiths College in London. In 1960 he set up a workshop in Forest Hill sharing with another pottery artist, Alan Wallwork. Rooke made progressive sculptural work and early pieces were hand-fashioned using coils and blocks. His work is found in private collections as well as museums and galleries around the world, including the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
