Modernist Cabinet or Armoire by André Sornay, mid-20th century, France. A simple design of clean lines - the main black panels being outlined by the natural wood of the frame and handles of the sliding doors.
The armoire is composed of wood and board with solid wooden details on a metal base-frame. The front and sides are finished in black while the interior and back panels are off-white. The body has three compartments, which provide good storage space: the main section houses shelves to the left - and space for shoes at the base - and a hanging rail to the right, while the upper section runs the full width of the cabinet; the back (not designed to be seen) has an air gap to allow the piece to breathe.
The armoire is in good vintage condition, with signs of wear appropriate to its age and history. The wood has a nice aged patina, and all components, including the mounting pegs for the shelves, look to be the original pieces. There are minor losses to the finish throughout including chips and scratches, mostly to the interior and reverse, and some signs of old re-touching to the black finish on the edges of the doors where they run in their channels. A joint top left is a little open, but is solid.
Overall for us this is an attractive yet understated piece - evocative of Japanese interior design - which presents well, with good aged character and practical application. Please contact us here if you would like more details or images.
