A heavy studio ceramic totem lamp by Bernard Rooke, England. A very unusual design, made up of six sections. Probably late 1960s.
A beautiful sculptural piece of studio pottery, made up of ceramic elements in natural tones of grey, terracotta and stone. This an early model, with hand-built elements; later pieces being mould-formed. There are signs of weathering and wear to the ceramic in line with age and use, and flaws arising from the crafting and firing process including small knocks and firing cracks. Felt pads level the base and provide protection. The gold-coloured metal stem (just visible in the images) is hand-painted, and this looks to be original. As with other early Rooke pieces this is not signed or stamped.
Wiring:
The lamp has been PAT tested for the UK, however we advise the wiring is checked and replaced as necessary prior to install. The switched lamp holder takes a single bayonet-fitting bulb; we always recommend low heat bulbs to protect the fixture for the future. The wire leaves the base from the back.
Shade:
The large hessian shade is shown for illustration only, and is not included here - the proportions and fabric are based on original designs of the time.
Approximate dimensions:
Height of base to top of bulb-holder: 90cm
Ceramic section only:
H: 74cm
W: 26cm at circular section
D: 19.5cm at base
