A monumental ceramic TOTEM lamp by Bernard Rooke, mid-20th century England.
A beautiful sculptural piece, made up of ceramic elements in natural tones of terracotta and stone. A very unusual model with rectangular blocks - some pierced, others decorated with pools of blue glass - over a square base.
The piece is in good original condition, with occasional minor flaws in line with age and the making and firing process, including grazes, nicks and fine firing cracks; felt pads level the base. This an early model, probably dating from the Greenwich years (mid 1960s) with hand-formed elements; later pieces being mould-formed. As with other early Rooke pieces this lamp is not signed or stamped.
Approximate dimensions:
Ceramic only: H 85cm x W 20cm at base x D 20cm at base
Wiring:
Wiring is original, with a switched lamp-holder taking a bayonet-fitting bulb; the lamp will require new wiring in the country of install. As always we advise low heat bulbs to protect the piece for the future.
Shade not included.
