Cabinet designed by Willy van der Meeren for Tubax, with sliding doors in blue/grey enamelled steel, and sapele wood sides and long fin-like door pulls. This rare model has a black metal back, with hanging space on the left and adjustable shelves on the right.
This piece of Belgian social furniture was designed as a wardrobe or locker for schools in the early 1950s. They are now highly collectable and sought after. The cabinet is in rarely seen original but good used condition. There is some wear to the wood and metal in line with use and age; the doors have no dents and run well. The grey door has an old light scratch which does not detract from the overall appearance.
Van der Meeren was a Belgian architect and industrial designer who produced a number of designs for Tubax, a manufacturer regarded as a pioneer of Modernism in Belgium. In 2008 a retrospective of his work was held at the Atomium in Brussels.
