Writing desk by Willy Van Der Meeren. Belgium 1953.
Willy van der Meeren (1923-2002) was a Belgian architect and designer, who was once a pupil of Le Corbusier. In the 1950s he created a number of pieces for Tubax - a manufacturer regarded as a pioneer of Modernism in Belgium - including simple multi-coloured wardrobes for schools, and the writing desks seen here.
This piece comprises original plywood and grey formica top, and black steel frame. The desk is shown with a plywood and steel chair - also by Tubax - which is listed separately.
